This Tunisian crochet cowl is great for keeping you warm and looking festive during the holiday season!

This free pattern really shows of your self striping yarns, but also looks good in solid colors. The Tunisian crochet stitches give this cowl a “knit” look.

You will need about 200 g (460 yds) total of DK weight yarn in two colors (100 g each), and a 5.5 mm crochet hook. The stitch repeat is very easy, and specific instructions for seaming are included.

Materials:

  • 200 g (460 yds) total of DK weight yarn in 2 colors (100 g each)

  • 5.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook (or regular crochet hook without ergonomic shaping)

Yarn used in sample:

  • Color A: 100 g (230 yd) Magic Mistletoe DK by Mandi’s Makings

  • Color B: 100 g (230 yd) Christmas Tree Farm DK by Mandi’s Makings

Gauge & Dimensions:

Gauge: 16 tss x 16 rows = 4 in x 4 in

Cowl dimensions: 11 in x 30 in (blocked)

Notes:

Tunisian Knit Stitch Bind Off (Tks BO)

  • Insert hook through the center of the stitch as if to create a tks. Yo, pull up a loop, pull loop through previous loop on hook (1 loop on hook), repeat across row, fasten off.

  • This method keeps the “knit” look of the stitches through the final row, but you can use the regular sl st bind off if you prefer.

Seaming

  • The tks crochet panels are joined using the sl st join. To make this join flatter and more stable, pick up the following loops on each row

    • From the right panel, there will be a “V” on the side. Only go through the bottom loop or the one furthest away from you.

    • From the left panel, do not pick up any loops through the “V” furthest to the right. Behind the rightmost loop, there is a little loop (or sometimes called third loop). Join through that loop only.

  • You can use a third yarn in a different color to make the seams really pop!

    • If using a third color, you will need approx. 18 yd for all four seams.

  • If sl st is not your favorite method, you can use the mattress stitch or whip stitch for a different look

Stitches & Abbreviations:

  • Ch - chain

  • Lts - last Tunisian stitch (make sure to go through both loops!)

  • Sl st - slip stitch

  • St - stitch

  • Tks - Tunisian crochet knit stitch

  • Tks BO - Tunisian crochet knit stitch bind off (see Notes)

  • Yo - yarn over

Pattern:

Panels:

With Color A, ch 11

Foundation row: Pick up a loop in the back of the second ch from hook. Continue to pick up a loop in each st across (11 loops on hook).

Return pass: ch 1, yo and pull through two loops. Repeat until 1 loop is left on hook.

Row 1: 9 tks, Lts (11 loops on hook). Repeat return pass from foundation row.

Repeat Row 1 until you have 124 rows total or until the panel measures about 30 in long.

Bind off: Tks BO across, fasten off.

Repeat pattern from beginning once more with Color A and twice with Color B (4 total panels).

Seaming:

Take one panel in Color A and Color B. Line up the panels lengthwise, Color A on the left and Color B on the right. Starting at the foundation row and using Color A, sl st join along the long edges of the panels to join them (see Notes for which stitches/loops to join through).

Repeat sl st join again with your joined panels on the left and the remaining Color A panel on the right. Repeat once more with the final Color B panel. Color panels should alternate: Color A, Color B, Color A, Color B.

Line up the short ends of the cowl and slip stitch join along the starting chain and the bind off edge.

Weave in ends and block.
